      Scottish historian and novelist (b. Nov. 23, 1909, Glasgow, Scot.—d. Jan. 9, 2000, Gullane, East Lothian, Scot.), published more than 130 historical novels, romances, biographies, histories, children's books, and architectural studies on Scottish castles. Although most of Tranter's books were derived from Scottish history and traditions, he also wrote a series of Western novels under the pen name Nye Tredgold. He was appointed OBE in 1983.
