      British film director (b. Aug. 10, 1915, Hull, Eng.—d. March 17, 2001, London, Eng.), was best known for his direction of seven entries in the Doctor series of light comedies starring Dirk Bogarde, James Robertson Justice, and Kenneth More—beginning with Doctor in the House (1954). Thomas's other films included the detective thriller The Clouded Yellow (1951), the World War II submarine drama Above Us the Waves (1955), A Tale of Two Cities (1958) with Bogarde as Sydney Carton, a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Thirty-Nine Steps (1959) starring More, the political drama No Love for Johnnie (1961), and Quest for Love (1971), a science-fiction romance. In the 1980s Thomas wrote for television.
