New Zealand-born American photographer (b. Nov. 17, 1916, Levin, N.Z.—d. Oct. 23, 2004, Norwalk, Conn.), worked for Life magazine from 1943 until 1972. He at first was a combat photographer and was one of the first to photograph Nagasaki, Japan, after the atomic bomb was dropped on it in 1945, but he later turned to sports photography and pioneered the adaptation of a racetrack photo-finish camera for use in capturing shots of athletes in motion.
