“Sparky”
American cartoonist (b. Nov. 26, 1922, Minneapolis, Minn.—d. Feb. 12, 2000, Santa Rosa, Calif.), spent nearly half a century creating Peanuts, a simple comic strip that reflected the humour, fantasies, and anxieties in the lives of a group of children, and made it one of the most popular in the world. The antics of the perennially frustrated roundheaded Charlie Brown and his friends—notably his sister, Sally; the fussbudget Lucy; Lucy's philosophical brother Linus, whose security blanket added a term to the English language; the piano-playing Beethoven fan Schroeder; and the sandal-wearing nonstudent Peppermint Patty—as well as Snoopy, his imaginative pet dog, appeared in more than 20 languages in over 2,600 newspapers in some 75 countries and were enjoyed by 355 million readers. Schulz's nickname came from the comic strip Barney Google, one of whose characters was the horse Spark Plug, and when he was a young child, Schulz knew he wanted cartoons also to give him a career. He practiced by copying the work of established cartoonists, and when he was 15, one of his drawings was printed in the “Ripley's Believe It or Not!” newspaper feature. Ironically, his high-school yearbook rejected his cartoons. Following high school, Schulz studied cartooning through a correspondence course offered by Art Instruction Inc. in Minneapolis. He then was drafted into the army for World War II service, and upon leaving the military he had a variety of jobs, including correcting students' work for Art Instruction, lettering comics in the Roman Catholic publication Timeless Topix, and drawing the Li'l Folks cartoon for the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press. The Saturday Evening Post also published some of his cartoons. In 1950 United Features Syndicate accepted the Li'l Folks strip but changed its name to Peanuts, a name Schulz disliked. At first only a handful of newspapers printed the strip, but by 1958 it was running in over 400. Peanuts also gave rise to huge amounts of related merchandise—including calendars, greeting cards, dolls, clothes, and hundreds of books—as well as such animated television specials as the Emmy Award-winning “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965) and “It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (1966) and the stage musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1967). Snoopy became NASA's official mascot, and in 1969 the Apollo 10 mission's Lunar Module was named “Snoopy” and the Command Module “Charlie Brown.” Among Schulz's honours were the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award (1955 and 1964) and the National Education Association's School Bell Award (1960). Schulz, who had been battling colon cancer and had announced his retirement, scheduled his final original strip for Sunday, February 13. His death came on the eve of that strip, which was a signed farewell.
