▪ 2007Glenn Edward SchembechlerAmerican football coach (b. April 1, 1929, Barberton, Ohio—d. Nov. 17, 2006, Southfield, Mich.), compiled a 194–48–5 record as head coach (1969–89) at the University of Michigan and an impressive lifetime record of 234–65–8. His teams won or shared in 13 Big Ten Conference titles and played in 10 Rose Bowls (winning 2). His career was inextricably tied to that of Ohio State head football coach Woody Hayes. Schembechler played collegiate football for Hayes at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and he became one of Hayes's assistant coaches at Ohio State. Schembechler was head coach at Miami (1963–68) before taking the top job at Michigan, where he revived the then-moribund program. His record against his mentor was 5–4–1. Schembechler also held the post of athletic director (1988–90) at Michigan, and after retiring from coaching he served as president (1990–92) of the Detroit Tigers baseball team.
