Schapiro, Boris
▪ 2003

British contract bridge player (b. Aug. 22 [Aug. 9, old style], 1909, Riga, Latvia, Russian Empire—d. Dec. 1, 2002, Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, Eng.), represented Great Britain in numerous international contract bridge tournaments, and was a member of the national team that was victorious at the 1955 Bermuda Bowl world championship. At the 1965 Bermuda Bowl, however, Schapiro and Terence Reese, his partner since 1948, were accused by the World Bridge Federation (WBF) of “using illegal hand signals.” After a year-long investigation, the British Bridge League found the pair not guilty of cheating. The WBF nonetheless suspended them from international competition (they were eventually reinstated), and Great Britain withdrew its team from the 1968 bridge Olympiad in protest. Schapiro captured his first title, the world pairs championship with American Oswald Jacoby, in 1932, and his last, the senior pairs world championship with Irving Gordon, in 1998, at age 89. He wrote the contract bridge column for The Sunday Times from 1966.
