      American politician who, as governor of North Carolina (1961-65), promoted racial equality at a time when it was unpopular to do so; he made unsuccessful attempts to be the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1972 and 1976 and served as a U.S. senator from 1986 to 1992 (b. Aug. 20, 1917, Laurinberg, N.C.—d. April 18, 1998, Durham, N.C.).
