Russell, Harold John

Russell, Harold John
▪ 2003

Canadian-born American actor (b. Jan. 14, 1914, North Sydney, N.S.—d. Jan. 29, 2002, Needham, Mass.), was the only actor ever to win two Academy Awards for the same role; for his sensitive portrayal of World War II veteran Homer Parrish in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), who, like Russell, had lost both hands in military service and had them replaced with hooks, he received both the best supporting actor Oscar and a special award for “bringing aid and comfort to disabled veterans through the medium of motion pictures.” He acted only occasionally after that but dedicated most of his life to serving as an advocate for the disabled. His autobiography, Victory in My Hands, was published in 1949, and a second volume, The Best Years of My Life, appeared in 1981.
