U.S. journalist (b. April 30, 1914, Raleigh, N.C.—d. July 22, 1996, Raleigh), had a long and distinguished career with The Wall Street Journal, rising from reporter to editor of the newspaper and serving as president (1960-71) of its publishing company, Dow Jones & Co. He guided the paper through spectacular growth and helped shape it into a top business daily. Royster, whose family had a tradition of naming children after states, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1935. The following year he became a reporter on the staff of the New York City News Bureau. He moved to the Journal later in 1936 and was assigned to the Washington, D.C., bureau. After service in the navy during World War II, Royster returned to the Journal. He was associate editor (1948-51), senior associate editor (1951-58), editor (1958-71), and senior vice president (1960-71) before retiring in 1971. From 1971 to 1986 he was a contributing editor, columnist of the weekly "Thinking Things Over," and William Rand Kenan professor of journalism and public affairs at his alma mater. Royster was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes. He received his first (1953) for editorial writing in recognition of the consistent excellence of his work. His second, for distinguished commentary, came in 1984. In 1986 Royster was honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
