▪ 2002Indian cricketer (b. May 31, 1928, Calcutta [Kolkata], India—d. Feb. 4, 2001, Kolkata), was a solid opening batsman for Bengal (1946–68) and India (1951–60), scoring 11,868 first-class runs (average 42.38), including 2,442 runs in 43 Tests (average 32.56). Although Roy's highest individual first-class score was 202 not out, in 1955 he made 173 runs in a world-record 413 opening stand with Vinoo Mankad against New Zealand. Their record for a first-wicket Test partnership still stood at the time of Roy's death.
