Henri Tanguy 
      French World War II Resistance leader (b. June 12, 1908, Morlaix, France—d. Sept. 8, 2002, Monteaux?, France), commanded the Resistance forces during the Parisian uprising against German occupation; he helped liberate Paris in August 1944 and was one of those who signed the document accepting Germany's surrender of the city. Originally a metallurgical worker, he joined the Communist Party in 1925 and fought with the International Brigades in Spain in 1937 (he later added Rol to his birth name, Tanguy, to honour a friend killed in Spain). An early leader in the underground, Rol-Tanguy was named commander of the French Forces of the Interior just before the Normandy landing in June 1944. After the war he served in the French army until 1962, but he never relinquished his communist affiliations. Rol-Tanguy received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1994 and was awarded honorary Spanish citizenship in 1996.
