▪ 1998

On Feb. 26, 1997, 14-year-old country music vocalist LeAnn Rimes won Grammy awards in two categories: best female country vocal performer and best new artist. She gained the honours less than a year after the release of her hit single "Blue" took her from relative anonymity to the top of the country music charts. Written some 35 years earlier by Dallas, Texas, disc jockey Bill Mack, the ballad was intended for country music legend Patsy Cline. Cline, however, died in a plane crash in 1963 without ever having recorded it, and Rimes's rich, smoky rendition of the number led to frequent comparisons between the two. When "Blue" reached the airwaves in May 1996, radio stations across the U.S. were inundated with calls requesting the tune. Shortly thereafter Rimes released an album with the same title, which sold more than 123,000 copies in its first week. Her ability to sing about the heartache of love gone wrong, songs that typify the country music genre, went far beyond her years. When Rimes crooned "Now that it's over, I realized/ Those weak words you whispered, were nothing but lies," it was difficult to believe that at the time it was recorded, she had never been on a date.

Rimes was born Aug. 28, 1982, in Jackson, Miss. She began singing before the age of two and won her first competition at age five. When Rimes was 8, she appeared for two weeks as a champion on television's "Star Search," and at 11 she recorded her first album, which was locally released on an independent label. Curb Records signed the young artist after Mike Curb heard her music and immediately recognized her ability. "Someone sent me her CD," said Curb. "I put it on, and everyone just turned their heads and said, 'Who is that?'"

In early 1997 Rimes released her second nationally distributed album, Unchained Melody/The Early Years, a collection of songs recorded prior to Blue, when she was 11 and 12 years old. The album included versions of the Beatles' "Yesterday" and the title track, the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." In April she received three Academy of Country Music awards, including the honour for best new female vocalist. During the remainder of the year, Rimes's career showed no signs of slowing down. She signed a reported six-figure contract to collaborate on a book entitled Holiday in Your Heart and was the subject of at least two paperback biographies. Her third album, You Light Up My Life, was released early in the fall and in the first six weeks sold more than one million copies.

▪ American singer
born Aug. 28, 1982, Jackson, Miss., U.S.

American country music singer who topped the charts at age 14 with her rendition of "Blue," a song originally written for country legend Patsy Cline (Cline, Patsy).

Rimes began singing at age two and won her first competition when she was five. Like Cline, Rimes first gained national exposure on a television talent show, appearing as champion for two weeks on Star Search when she was eight. She recorded her first full-length album three years later for a local independent label and was soon signed to Curb Records. It was with Curb that her career took off, and her debut album, Blue (1996), brought the teenager a number one hit and a pair of Grammy Awards. Her label was quick to capitalize on this success, releasing two albums of cover versions (previously recorded material)—Unchained Melody: The Early Years and You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs—in 1997 before Sittin' on Top of the World reached the market the following year. Subsequent albums include the eponymous LeAnn Rimes (1999), the pop-tinged Twisted Angel (2002), and the European exclusive Whatever We Wanna (2006). Rimes's 2007 release Family showcased her talents as a songwriter and pushed her total album sales over the 37 million mark.
