Olson, Carl
▪ 2003
“Bobo”
American boxer (b. July 11, 1928, Honolulu, Hawaii—d. Jan. 16, 2002, Honolulu), was middleweight champion of the world from 1953 to 1955; his most notable fights, however, were four losses to the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson. Olson won the middleweight title by scoring a unanimous decision over Randy Turpin of Britain in October 1953 and went on to three successful title defenses. He lost the title when he was knocked out by Robinson in December 1955. Robinson had defeated Olson twice previously, in 1950 and 1952. Olson returned for a fourth fight with Robinson, in May 1956, but again was knocked out. Olson fought for another 10 years, mostly in the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, but never fought another title match. He left the ring with a career record of 99 wins, 16 losses, and 2 draws. Olson was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000.
