Oberoi, Mohan Singh
▪ 2003

Indian hotelier (b. Aug. 15, 1898, Bhaun, Punjab, India [now in Pakistan]—d. May 3, 2002, New Delhi, India), built an international chain of luxury hotels; he was the first Indian hotel owner to introduce such modern innovations as the employment of chambermaids. Oberoi was born in a tiny village in what later became Pakistan. In 1922 he took a job as a hotel clerk in the British government town of Simla, India, and in 1934 he bought his first hotel from his British employer. Oberoi later specialized in buying run-down or undervalued properties and renovating them, with meticulous attention to detail, into luxury accommodations. He took control of Associated Hotels of India, Ltd., in 1944; by 2002 the Oberoi Group held some three dozen hotels in a half dozen countries.
