      American sociology and demographics educator (b. April 8, 1931, Brooklyn, N.Y.—d. Aug. 10, 2000, Burnsville, N.C.), was the founding director in 1972 of the Center for Demographic Studies at Duke University, Durham, N.C. During his 25-year tenure there, he was at the forefront of analyzing and compiling statistics on the aging population worldwide. Besides serving as a consultant to government agencies, Myers was coordinator for the Committee of Centers of Populations Research, the International Network on Health Expectancy, and the population activities segment of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. In addition to earning a B.A. (1953) from Yale University, Myers gained a Ph.D. (1963) from the University of Washington; he wrote or co-wrote more than 100 publications dealing with demographic trends and was the editor of various professional journals on aging and gerontology.
