commanded the full-scale U.S. military invasion of Grenada on Oct. 25, 1983, after a bloody Marxist coup resulted in the execution of the country's prime minister and 15 of his supporters. Metcalf had less than 36 hours to prepare for Operation Urgent Fury, but he succeeded in pulling together some 6,000 troops, which, in just three days, successfully secured the island nation and seized the coup leader, Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard. Among Metcalf's many decorations were the Bronze Star, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit.
