Mee, Bertram
▪ 2002
“Bertie”
British association football (soccer) physiotherapist and manager (b. Dec. 25, 1918, Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, Eng.—d. Oct. 21, 2001, London, Eng.), guided Arsenal to both the League championship and the Football Association (FA) Cup in 1970–71, a feat that had been accomplished only once before (by Tottenham Hotspur in 1960–61); that feat earned him the FA award as Manager of the Year. Mee briefly played football in the late 1930s before training as a physiotherapist specializing in football injuries. He was made Arsenal's interim manager in 1966 and rebuilt the team, with an emphasis on hard work and meticulous preparation. After winning the coveted double in 1971, the team was runner-up in 1972 but then slumped. Mee resigned in 1976 and thereafter worked with Watford as assistant manager, general manager, and director until his retirement in 1991. He was made OBE in 1983.
