Maggio, Michael John

Maggio, Michael John
▪ 2001

American stage director (b. July 3, 1951, Chicago, Ill.—d. Aug. 19, 2000, Chicago), gained a national reputation as one of the most talented in his field. Besides directing more than 50 plays at such venues as Chicago's Goodman Theatre, the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minn., and the Seattle (Wash.) Repertory Theatre, he served as artistic director of Northlight Theatre in Evanston, Ill. (1984–87), associate artistic director of the Goodman (from 1987), and dean of the Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago (from 1999). Afflicted with cystic fibrosis, he underwent a rare double lung transplant in 1991 that saved his life and gave him nearly 10 more years in which to pursue his creative endeavours; complications from that procedure, however, ultimately took his life.
