Kuwa Mekki, Yousif
▪ 2002

Sudanese resistance leader (b. August 1945, Al-Akhwal, The Sudan—d. March 31, 2001, Norwich, Eng.), as the charismatic commander of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), led a guerrilla rebellion on behalf of non-Muslim blacks in southern Sudan against the Islamic fundamentalist rulers based in the Arab north of the country. Kuwa was a member of the Miri tribe, an ethnic subgroup of the Nuba people, and was reared as a Muslim with little knowledge of his ethnic heritage. He studied political science and Nuba history at the University of Khartoum, qualified as a teacher, and was elected (1981) to the regional assembly. As The Sudan slipped into civil war between the north and the south, Kuwa abandoned his teaching career to join the SPLA in 1984.
