      American publisher (b. April 18, 1918, Rising City, Neb.—d. May 5, 2001, Lincoln, Neb.), created Cliffs Notes, a widely popular series of literary study guides. Hillegass worked as a manager at the Nebraska Book Co. before publishing the first Cliffs Notes, a summary of Hamlet, in 1958. He eventually published more than 220 titles and sold more than 50 million Cliffs Notes worldwide. In 1998 Hillegass sold the company for $14 million.
