was a prominent civil rights attorney who battled against racial prejudice in numerous cases, most famously the 1954 landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregated public schools were unconstitutional. At one point Hill was handling 75 civil rights cases, and he won a succession of them involving voting rights, jury employment rights, and access to school buses for black students. In 1999 Hill was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
