Hibbler, Albert
▪ 2002
“Al”
American singer (b. Aug. 16, 1915, Tyro, Miss.—d. April 24, 2001, Chicago, Ill.), rose to fame with the Duke Ellington band (1943–51), singing some of composer Ellington's most enduring songs—“I'm Just a Lucky So and So,” “Don't Get Around Much Anymore,” and “Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me”—in a low baritone voice and with eccentric vocal effects. On his own the blind performer recorded his biggest hit, the ballad “Unchained Melody” (1955), followed by “After the Lights Go Down Low.” During the civil rights movement, Hibbler was arrested twice during protest marches; he continued to perform regularly into the 1970s.
