      Mexican writer whose novels, plays, and short stories revealed an intelligence and lyric intensity that made her one of the country's leading literary voices; she became politically active during her marriage to writer Octavio Paz (Paz, Octavio ) (q.v.) and spent more than 20 years in exile after being accused of instigating a 1968 student riot in which hundreds of protesters were killed (b. Dec. 12, 1920, Puebla, Mex.—d. Aug. 22, 1998, Cuernavaca, Mex.).
