      American fighter pilot (b. Jan. 28, 1919, Oil City, Pa.—d. Jan. 31, 2002, Huntington, N.Y.), shot down more than three dozen enemy planes as an ace fighter pilot in both World War II and the Korean War. Gabreski, who joined the Army Air Corps in 1941, was credited with 31 “kills” in Europe during World War II, and he added 6 more kills and shared credit for another one during the Korean War. He retired from the air force with the rank of colonel in 1967. He later worked in the aviation industry and, from 1978 to 1981, was president of the Long Island Rail Road.
