▪ 2001

Russian eye surgeon (b. Aug. 8, 1927, Proskurov, Ukrainian S.S.R. [now Khmelnytskyy, Ukraine], U.S.S.R.—d. June 2, 2000, near Moscow, Russia), developed (1974) radial keratotomy, the first surgical procedure to correct myopia using tiny, precise incisions near the cornea of the eye. Although the technique was later supplanted by laser surgery, tens of thousands of patients were operated on at Mikrokhirurgiya Glaza, Fyodorov's eye microsurgery institute in Moscow, and at medical centres throughout the world. Fyodorov, who also developed (1973) a surgical treatment for glaucoma, was elected to the Russian Duma (parliament) in 1995 and ran unsuccessfully for president in 1996.
