James Rufus 
      American civil rights activist (b. Oct. 4, 1928, Chicago, Ill.—d. Jan. 10, 2005, Washington, D.C.), served as executive secretary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (1961–66). In that position he was a pivotal figure in the struggle for racial equality, especially in the organization of the Freedom Rides in the South and of the 1963 March on Washington.
