Epstein, Israel

Epstein, Israel
▪ 2006

Polish-born Chinese author and journalist (b. April 20, 1915, Warsaw, Pol., Russian Empire—d. May 26, 2005, Beijing, China), through prolific writings and his position as editor of the newsmagazine China Today, served as an ardent propagandist for Mao Zedong and Chinese communism. Epstein moved with his family to China at the age of two. He worked as a journalist from his teens, covering the Japanese invasion of China for Western news organizations and eventually interviewing Mao extensively in 1944. Epstein published a series of glowing portrayals of Mao, beginning with The Unfinished Revolution in China (1949). He became editor of China Today (then called China Reconstructs) in 1951 and held that position until 1985. His support of Chinese communism remained steadfast over the years even though Epstein himself was imprisoned for a time during the Cultural Revolution. Among Epstein's other books were From Opium War to Liberation (1954), Tibet Transformed (1983), Woman in World History: Soong Ching Ling (1993), and My China Eye: Memoirs of a Jew and a Journalist (2005).
