Eberhart, Richard Ghormley
▪ 2006

American poet, playwright, and teacher (b. April 5, 1904, Austin, Minn.—d. June 9, 2005, Hanover, N.H.), received numerous awards for his lyric verse that combined a modern style with elements of Romanticism. Eberhart earned degrees at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. (B.A., 1926), and St. John's College, Cambridge (B.A., 1929; M.A., 1933). Following the publication of his first poetry collection, A Bravery of Earth (1930), he held a series of jobs, including tutor to the son of King Prajadhipok of Siam (now Thailand) and executive at a furniture-polish company. Eberhart began teaching at universities in the 1950s and became known for mentoring aspiring poets, most notably at Dartmouth, where he taught from 1956 to 1971. Eberhart frequently explored issues of death and loss in his poems, which were often set in the natural world. His award-winning collections included Selected Poems, 1930–1965 (1965; Pulitzer Prize) and Collected Poems, 1930–1976 (1976; National Book Award). From 1959 to 1961 he was consultant in poetry at the Library of Congress (poet laureate), and in 1962 he was a co-winner of the Bollingen Prize for Poetry. Eberhart also wrote verse dramas, many of which were staged by the Poets' Theatre, which he helped found in 1950.
