      American executive (b. April 9, 1912, New York, N.Y.—d. April 30, 2004, New York City), oversaw the growth of Philip Morris, Inc., into one of the world's largest corporations. In his 21 years (1957–78) as top executive of the tobacco company, he diversified its holdings, acquiring assets such as Miller Brewing Co. and Seven-Up Co., and revamped the Marlboro brand, which became the world's most popular cigarette. He was also a vocal opponent of antismoking regulations.
