      American educator (b. Feb. 9, 1905, New York, N.Y.—d. Dec. 3, 2002, Shelburne, Vt.), was an assistant dean at Harvard University when he began the quest for a meritocratic means of assessing applicants for admission to the university. In 1947, with Harvard president James Bryant Conant, he founded the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to encourage standardized testing in college admissions. Until his retirement in 1970, Chauncey served as president of ETS, which promoted the use of the Scholastic Aptitude (from 1994, Assessment) Test (SAT). Thousands of American universities eventually adopted the SAT as part of their admissions process.
