Bingham, Barry, Jr.

Bingham, Barry, Jr.
▪ 2007

American editor and publisher (b. Sept. 23, 1933, Louisville, Ky.—d. April 3, 2006, Glenview, Ky.), succeeded his father as editor-publisher of the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times, newspapers that had a reputation for supporting liberal causes and civil rights. The crown jewel of the family's empire, which also included radio stations, a television station, and a printing company, was the Courier-Journal, which garnered eight Pulitzer Prizes (three during Bingham's tenure). After Bingham tried to ease his two sisters from the board of directors, a family feud ensued, which resulted in Bingham's father's selling all the concerns so that the proceeds could be divided. In 1986 Gannett purchased the newspapers for $306.9 million, ending three generations of ownership by the Binghams.
