Jean-Pierre Philippe Salomons
French actor (b. Jan. 5, 1911, Paris, France—d. Jan. 30, 2001, St. Tropez, France), employed his suave good looks and Gallic charm in more than 60 French and American motion pictures during a 70-year stage and screen career. Although Aumont was often cast in B-grade movies, his films included Marcel Carné's Hôtel du Nord (1938), François Truffaut's La Nuit américaine (1972; Day for Night), and Claude Lelouch's Le Chat et la souris (1975; Cat and Mouse). He also starred in the original stage production of Jean Cocteau's La Machine infernale (1934; The Infernal Machine) and the 1963 Broadway musical Tovarich opposite Vivien Leigh; on television Aumont appeared in such miniseries as A Tale of Two Cities (1989) and Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1998; The Count of Monte Cristo). In 1991 he received an honorary César (French Oscar) for lifetime achievement.
