British author (b. Sept. 4, 1924, Rye, Sussex, Eng.—d. Jan. 4, 2004, Petsworth, West Sussex, Eng.), wrote fantasy, adventure, horror, and suspense tales for both juvenile and adult readers. Aiken, the daughter of the American writer Conrad Aiken, was educated at home as a child and grew up with a love of literature. She was perhaps best known for The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (1962), an adventure story that follows the fortunes of two girls unwittingly left in the grip of evil caretakers. It was the first of Aiken's more than 60 short-story collections and novels for young people.
