Inlet, western Pacific Ocean.

Located off the east-central coast of Honshu, Japan, it is about 30 mi (48 km) long and 23 mi (37 km) wide. It provides a spacious harbour area for several Japanese cities, including Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kawasaki. A highway connecting Kawasaki with Kisarazu (pop., 2000 prelim.: 122,766) on the opposite side of the bay was opened in 1997; it includes a bridge and an undersea tunnel that is 5.9 mi (9.5 km) long.

bay, Japan
Japanese  Tōkyō-wan,

inlet of the Pacific Ocean on the east-central coast of Honshu Island, Japan. Along the northwestern shore of the bay are the major cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kawasaki. The city of Yokosuka lies along the bay's western end, while Chiba lies along its eastern shore. The bay is almost enclosed at its southern opening by the Miura (west) and Bōsō (east) peninsulas. The bay is linked with the Pacific Ocean by the Uraga Channel, which lies between these two peninsulas. Much land has been reclaimed along the bay's shoreline, and most of this is now used for industrial sites and port facilities that are part of the Keihin Industrial Zone (q.v.). The bay averages only about 40 feet (12 m) in depth. In 1986 construction began on a highway crossing of the bay from Kawasaki on its western shore to Kisarazu on its eastern shore. The crossing will consist mostly of a long undersea tunnel, supplemented by a bridge (completed in 1994) and by an artificial island built in the bay.
