Thousand Islands
a group of about 1500 islands in S Canada and the N United States, in the St. Lawrence River at the outlet of Lake Ontario: summer resorts.

Group of about 1,500 small islands extending 80 mi (128 km) in the Saint Lawrence River between New York state, U.S., and Ontario, Canada.

Some islands belong to Canada and some to the U.S. The Thousand Islands include summer resort facilities and the Canadian St. Lawrence Islands National Park, which was established in 1904 and covers 988 ac (400 ha). The Thousand Islands International Bridge, which contains five spans linking some of the islands and is 8.5 mi (13.7 km) long, connects New York and Ontario.

Those on the west side, including Amherst, Wolfe (49 square miles [127 square km], the largest), Howe, Simcoe, and Grenadier, are mostly Canadian; those on the east, including Grindstone, Wells, and Carleton, are in New York, U.S. They form a traditional recreational area. Some are privately owned. The St. Lawrence Islands National Park embraces several of the Canadian islands and part of the Ontario shoreline. Surveyed in 1818, many were given names associated with the War of 1812. Thousand Islands International Bridge (1938) spans the river between Collins Landing, N.Y., and Ivy Lea, Ont., east of Ganonoque.
