city, Stearns county, central Minnesota, U.S. It lies on the Sauk River at the southern tip of Sauk Lake, about 45 miles (70 km) northwest of St. Cloud (Saint Cloud). Settled in 1856 and laid out in 1863, the city was named for its location on the central part of the Sauk River, which itself was named for the Sauk Indians. The community developed as a trade centre for a rich farming area; dairy products, poultry, oats, barley, rye, hay, corn (maize), and soybeans are produced. It is best known, however, as the birthplace of Sinclair Lewis (Lewis, Sinclair), the United States's first Nobel Prize-winning novelist (1930). His boyhood home (1880) has been restored with period furnishings and family memorabilia, and the Sinclair Lewis Interpretive Center contains exhibits on the writer and includes a research library. Lewis's grave site is also in the city, and an annual festival in July commemorates him. Sauk Centre was the model for the “Gopher Prairie” of Main Street (1920) and was also the setting for other novels by Lewis. Inc. village, 1876; city, 1889. Pop. (1990) 3,581; (2000) 3,930.
