      in the United States, any of a number of coastal areas reserved by the federal government for recreational use by the public. Cape Hatteras (Hatteras, Cape) in North Carolina was established as the first national seashore in 1953. Others have since been added and include Cape Cod (Massachusetts), Padre Island (Texas), Point Reyes (California), Fire Island (New York), Assateague Island (Maryland and Virginia), Cape Lookout (North Carolina), Gulf Islands (Florida and Mississippi), Canaveral (Florida), and Cumberland Island (Georgia). Their attractions include beaches, waterfowl and other wildlife, and fishing.
