a large, nocturnal, wingless, long-horned grasshopper, Stenopelmatus fuscus, occuring chiefly in loose soil and sand along the Pacific coast of the U.S. Also called sand cricket.

 any of about 50 species of insects in the family Gryllacrididae (order Orthoptera) that are related to grasshoppers and crickets. Jerusalem crickets are large, brownish, and awkward insects and are found in Asia, South Africa, and both North and Central America.

      The Jerusalem cricket is active at night and spends the day in burrows beneath rocks or in sand. Its thick, heavily armoured front legs are used for digging.

      Jerusalem crickets are sometimes classified in the family Stenopelmatidae.
