hyaluronidase

hyaluronidase
/huy'euh loo ron"i days', -dayz'/, n.
1. Biochem. a mucolytic enzyme found in the testes, in snake venom, and in hemolytic streptococci and certain other bacteria, that decreases the viscosity of the intercellular matrix by breaking down hyaluronic acid.
2. Pharm. a commercial form of this substance, used chiefly to promote the diffusion of intradermally injected drugs.
[1935-40; HYALURON(IC) + -id- (by analogy with AMIDASE, PEPTIDASE, etc.) + -ASE]

enzyme
any of a group of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis (chemical decomposition involving the elements of water) of certain complex carbohydrates such as hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfates. The enzymes have been found in insects, leeches, snake venom, mammalian tissues (testis being the richest mammalian source), and in bacteria.
