city, seat (1872) of Otter Tail county, west-central Minnesota, U.S. It lies along the Otter Tail River in a lake area, about 115 miles (185 km) northwest of St. Cloud (Saint Cloud) and about 25 miles (40 km) east of the Minnesota–North Dakota border. The city was claimed in 1857 by Joseph Whitford, named for James Fergus, financial backer of Whitford's expedition, and laid out in 1870. It became a trading centre, and early growth was based on the milling of lumber, flour, and wool, using the river's waterpower. The city is the synodic headquarters of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren of America and is the site of a Lutheran seminary. Fergus Falls lies in a fertile agricultural region; dairying, livestock raising, and the production of corn (maize), hay, wheat, oats, and other grains are important. Baked goods and wood products are also produced. Tourism, particularly centred around the county's more than 1,000 lakes, is an important industry, and the city is a regional health care centre. Maplewood and Glendalough state parks are nearby. The city is home to a community and technical college campus. Inc. village, 1872; city, 1881. Pop. (1990) 12,362; (2000) 13,471.
